The Mustard Seed

Matthew 17:20...And Jesus said unto them, ...Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you...

Many times we have heard it said, "See, if you only had faith the size of a grain of mustard seed, you could move mountains"... But is that what Jesus said here? Too many people assume that this scripture refers to the size, or amount of our faith. In actuality, it is referring to the "strength", or "certainty" of that faith.
How many mountains have you seen moved by faith lately? In order to gain another view of exactly what is said in this verse, let us couple some other verses concerning faith, as this is the only way we can glean the true meaning of any scripture.

Matthew, Verse 21...Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, if ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.
Verse 22...And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Now, let's consider the mustard seed again, in a slightly different light. Jesus did not say, "If ye have faith "the size of" a grain of mustard seed, he said "as " a grain of mustard seed. Think about it...if you plant a kernel of corn, what will grow from it? ...Corn, you say? ...How do you know? ...Don't you even suspect that maybe a sprig of wheat might come up? How about a flower, or a hickory tree? No, You say! Only corn will grow. There is absolutely no doubt about it. Now we begin to see a different view of what Jesus said. When we plant an acorn, we know that an oak tree will grow from it. We have no doubt of it.

It is easy to see that both scriptures agree then, that we must have absolute faith to speak to the trees and move the mountains. That little mustard seed--among the tiniest of seeds--has absolutely no doubt that when it is planted it will grow up to be the greatest of herbs. That's the kind of faith we need to have. There is so much need in this world today, and too many of us are trying to change things with a teeny bit of shaky faith.

How do we achieve that kind of faith? We must learn to depend totally on the Lord God for all things. In the United States of America this is extremely hard to do. Here, we have so much of everything we tend to forget about the Lord, except when we're in trouble, or dire need. That's why it is so much more common to hear of miracles in other countries, where Christians have learned to depend upon the God they serve to supply their needs, rather than looking to their own means, or to their governments to get them what they need.

During two and one-half years on the road in a motorhome, our family touched upon that kind of dependency on the Lord God Almighty. We saw miracles... literal miracles. So we can attest to the fact that it works. Mustard Seed Faith will bring results. Just remember the condition that Jesus placed on our prayers... "And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, BELIEVING, ye shall receive.

In Jesus' Name,
AMEN
