How many like to listen to music, especially to our favorite singers? There are plenty of people who can sing very well, and it brings us much joy and relaxation. But have you ever noticed that no matter how good the singer is, the song sounds infinitely better when someone else joins in with perfect harmony? The whole quality and value of the song increases beyond measure.
I remember some years ago when a friend and myself had a duet. My friend could sing wonderful harmony. We were brought in for an audition in a country music barn in New York State. Another band was playing when we came in, and we were announced when they went on break. Nobody paid much attention to the new duet, and most of the crowd began to head for refreshments in another room. We struck a chord, and began to sing. As my friend hit that perfect harmony, everyone suddenly stopped, turned around and came back to their seats, forgetting about the refreshments.
Had either I or my friend begun to sing alone, the situation probably wouldn't have changed much, if at all. But the harmony changed everything and made a drastic difference. People love, respect, enjoy and need harmony.
God is the same way. Harmony is precious to him. Not just the harmony of song, but the harmony of his children working and living together. The harmony of whole churches...indeed, all churches working one with another. The heavenly harmony which can only come from putting the love of God into practice, which is our christian duty.
All too often church members become separate from one another. A grudge here, a little anger there; these cause the church to be in disharmony, and although some are doing their level best to serve the Lord, this dissension takes away drastically from the effectiveness of their attempts. In such cases, heaven is not pleased.
But when, as it happens when the body follows the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the problems are worked out, there follows a heavenly harmony. At this point, the angels stop what they're doing and turn around to hear the wonderful sounds of togetherness! Heaven rejoices, and miracles become possible again! This is the harmony that God loves...because it is, in fact, based on love.
At this time of year, when the thankfulness for the advent of Jesus Christ is at the forefront, it seems that heavenly harmony is prevalent among most of God's people. But the truth of the matter is that God wants it to be here every day of the year. If we will dwell on the worship of Jesus throughout the days, weeks and months through which we live, the angels will be in constant joy, lifted up by the incomparable and most precious sounds and sights of heavenly harmony in this trouble earth.
Are you in harmony with all your fellow Christians? Do you harbor something in your heart that shouldn't be there? If so, then you need to obey the Gospel of Christ and get free of it. Forgive, that you might be forgiven, and be in harmony with God. We had all better be! If we expect to live in God's majestic heaven, then we must be in heavenly harmony! There is nothing that is worth missing the harmony of Heaven!
